An official statement from the Monacan Indian Nation concerning Mr. Rick Lawhorn
This statement is intended to inform the membership of the Monacan Indian Nation as well as the general public of an area of concern for the nation as well as to clarify some points surrounding the aforementioned area of concern. Mr. Rick Lawhorn, a recent enrollee of the Monacan Indian Nation, reached out to the nation in July of 2016 via email about his desire to learn more about Monacan heritage, culture and traditions. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Lawhorn attended a tribal meeting where he disseminated a multi-page document outlining all of the changes he would like to see made within the Monacan nation; he was met with resistance from the tribal members present and left the meeting immediately after adjournment.
Since this point in time, mainly via social media, Mr. Lawhorn has become an outspoken critic of nearly every cultural, spiritual, social and political institution associated with the Monacan Indian Nation, referring to members who live in the vicinity of our base community at Bear Mountain as a "cult" and making numerous reckless, unfounded and nasty statements about the people of the Monacan Indian Nation.
While Mr. Lawhorn is an enrolled tribal member and has as much a right to freedom of speech as anyone else, please note the following: Mr. Rick Lawhorn in no way speaks for the Monacan Nation in any official capacity nor from any position of authority. Also, despite misleading information to the contrary, Mr. Lawhorn does not operate the official Facebook page of the Monacan Indian Nation. We, the people of the Monacan Indian Nation, advise that Mr. Lawhorn's statements about the Monacan Indian Nation should be evaluated by those who encounter them as the personal opinions of an individual bent on the disruption of a free and sovereign indigenous people.
