MONACAN INDIAN 15TH ANNUAL POWWOW

Special Educational Day: May 18, 2007

Dear Parents / Educator,

The Monacan Indian Nation invites you to join with us as we celebrate our 15th Annual Monacan Powwow. Spend the day with us at Route 130., Elon, VA. Albert Farm – 6 miles west of Route 29 north & 25 miles east of Natural Bridge.

A special educational day will be held on May 18, 2007; with many presentations and demonstrations planned for students grades, K-12. The powwow will feature Native American dancers, drummers, and artists from Virginia and across the U.S. Many artists will demonstrate or share information on how their crafts are made.

Educational exhibits and activities will be scheduled between 9 a.m. –2 p.m. and will include:

  • WOODLANDS LIFE STYLE CAMP:
    Monacans and their friends from other Native peoples will share hands on skills and crafts from both their ancient past and the present.
    • Basket Making with local plant materials / Pottery from central Virginia.
    • Clothing from deerskin, shell and other natural materials
    • Tools for home and hunt-made of bone, antler and stone / Traditional Indian gardening and foods.

  • STORYTELLING PROGRAMS:
    Educational and entertaining, the stories show how Indians taught social values to their children, and they still can teach us all today.

  • DANCING AND DRUMMING:
    Dancers, from many tribes, in their traditional clothing, will show the different dances done at powwows throughout the U.S. Special demonstration dances will be performed as well as friendship, round dance and other chances for visitors to dance with their Native hosts.

  • LIVE BUFFALO:
    Learn about the American bison from Fred Perkins of Whitefeather Bison in Ohio.

  • BIRDS OF PREY:
    See live Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, and Owls. Learn from Earl Schriver about their habits and mysteries.

Crafts and souvenirs will be for sale. Students and teachers may want to purchase items for home or classroom.


Bring a lunch and picnic on the grass or you can purchase food from Native vendors at the powwow. SPECIAL ~~ school day lunch sale: Hot dog and a drink for $1.00

We need to know how many students will be attending, their grade level and arrival and departure times. Please fill out the registration form below and send to above address. You may register and pay in advance or have money ready at the gate. If you do not pre-pay, we still need the pre-registration.
